St Clement's Church, Grade I listed church in West Thurrock, England
St Clement's Church is a Grade I listed church in West Thurrock, Essex, built with elements from several different periods of construction. The building has a rectangular chancel, north and south chapels, and a tower that together give it a varied and layered appearance.
The site goes back to the 13th century, and the oldest surviving part is a circular tower from the 12th century that once served as the nave. A major rebuilding in the 13th century transformed the layout into the form that still shapes the building today.
St Clement's was used as a filming location for the 1994 movie Four Weddings and a Funeral, making it familiar to audiences far beyond its local area. Visitors often walk around the exterior looking for angles they recognize from the film.
The church sits in West Thurrock and is most easily reached by car, as public transport links in the area are limited. It is worth checking opening arrangements before you go, as access can vary depending on the time of year.
The restoration of the building was funded by Procter & Gamble to mark 50 years of their nearby factory, completed in 1990. It is one of the few cases where an industrial company took full responsibility for saving a medieval church.
