St Cuthbert's Swallet, Natural cave system in Mendip Hills, England
St Cuthbert's Swallet is a cave system in the Mendip Hills with more than 6 kilometers of passages spanning seven levels and containing deep pits plus mineral deposits in limestone. The cave features several underground lakes and complex chambers that reveal different geological layers.
The cave was discovered in 1953 after exploration efforts started in 1944, leading to a controlled access system established in 1955. Since then it has become an important site for karst cave research and geological documentation in Britain.
The Bristol Exploration Club manages cave access through a structured leadership system, maintaining geological preservation standards while facilitating scientific research opportunities.
Visiting requires prior permission from the Bristol Exploration Club and full caving gear plus experienced guidance. Access is restricted due to flooding risks and precautions against water are needed.
Water flowing into the cave travels through the underground maze and eventually emerges at Wookey Hole Cavern as part of the River Axe. This underground waterway connects two of the region's most notable karst features.
