St. Catherine's Hill, Iron Age hillfort in Winchester, England.
St. Catherine's Hill is an Iron Age hillfort above Winchester with ancient earthwork defenses that follow the natural contours of the chalk slopes. The fortifications remain visible as gentle ridges across the hillside, shaping its distinctive landform.
The hillfort was established in the Iron Age, long before Roman conquest of Britain. Later peoples, including the Belgae, modified the site before Winchester became a major center for Roman and early medieval Britain.
The Miz-Maze is a medieval turf labyrinth with nine winding pathways converging at a central point, blending elements from Christian and pre-Christian traditions.
Two main routes climb to the summit: an open southern path and a shadier northwestern trail with steep steps. Both require moderate physical effort, though the northern path is steeper and may be muddy after rain.
The site preserves one of Britain's eight remaining turf labyrinths, notable for its groove-marked pathway rather than the typical raised turf design. This rare feature makes it a particularly unusual example of medieval earthwork craftsmanship.
