St Leonard was a medieval church building on Foster Lane that featured stone construction typical of its era. Only fragments of its walls remain visible at the site today, partially incorporated into the surrounding green space.
The church was established in the 13th century and served the community for several centuries. It was destroyed during the Great Fire of 1666 and never rebuilt afterward.
The burial ground of St Leonard became insufficient by 1579, leading to the expansion into the Dean's Garden area for additional space.
The site is located in a busy central London area that is easy to reach on foot. The remains are straightforward to view since they sit within a public park accessible to all.
English poet Francis Quarles was buried at the site, connecting it to important literary figures of the 1600s. This burial reflects how the place served people of standing in the city.
