St George’s Interdenominational Chapel, Heathrow Airport, Interdenominational chapel at Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom.
St George's Interdenominational Chapel is an underground chapel at London's Heathrow Airport featuring three distinct prayer areas arranged beneath a vaulted crypt design. This subterranean structure provides insulation from the surrounding airport noise and activity.
Architect Frederick Gibberd designed this chapel, which opened in 1968 as an ecumenical prayer space at the airport. It has since expanded its function to serve people of multiple faith traditions.
Chaplains from Anglican, Catholic, Free Church, Muslim, and Jewish traditions work here to serve people of different faiths. The space is designed to welcome and accommodate all these communities equally.
The chapel is located near Terminal 5 and requires advance arrangements for most visits, though the adjoining Memorial Garden remains accessible to the public. Plan time for quiet reflection when visiting the gardens or chapel area.
A tall oak cross stands prominently in the Memorial Garden as the focal point of this green space. Plaques throughout the garden honor members of the airport community who have passed away.
