The building started as Church of St Simon in 1840s, designed by architects S.J. Hicks and S.B. Gabriel, before becoming a Greek Orthodox church in 1978.
The Greek Orthodox congregation formed gradually through maritime connections, with sailors arriving at Bristol port establishing the initial community presence.
The church maintains regular services under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, welcoming both Greek Orthodox members and visitors.
The churchyard contains distinctive coping blocks constructed from copper-slag, matching materials used in the neighboring Black Castle Public House.
