St Mary's Church, Mellor

St Mary's Church is a Gothic Revival church in Mellor, North West England, built with sandstone walls and a slate roof featuring angular buttresses. A prominent west tower rises above the structure, topped by a slender needle spire.

The church was designed in 1827 by architects Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson and completed in 1829 with funding from the Church Building Commission. Its construction followed the 19th-century revival of Gothic architectural styles.

The church holds an octagonal wooden pulpit recognized as the oldest in England, alongside a Norman font from the late 12th century. These two objects are significant for understanding the site's layered past.

Visiting is best arranged around service times or by checking opening hours in advance with the local parish. The churchyard is easily accessible through the village and offers a quiet space for exploration.

The churchyard contains remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross and stone shaft stocks, relics from the village's earliest periods. Additionally, memorials for 16 Commonwealth service personnel from both World Wars mark the broader history of the region.
