Stagenhoe, Grade II listed English country house in St Paul's Walden, England
Stagenhoe is an English country house in the village of St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, with a stuccoed south-facing front set within gardens and woodland. The building dates mainly from the 18th century and was extended during the 19th century, including the addition of a western porch.
The estate was already recorded before 1066 and was largely rebuilt after a fire around 1740. That rebuilding gave the house the form it has today.
The estate was home to the Earl of Caithness family and held connections to figures of historical importance in British society. This background shapes how the place is understood today.
The building now operates as a nursing home, so public access is limited and it is worth checking in advance before visiting. The surrounding village of St Paul's Walden is quiet and easy to explore on foot.
Within the grounds there are five registered caravan pitches, which is an unusual arrangement for a listed country house of this kind. This side of the property is rarely noticed by those who come to see the house itself.
