Church of St Mary and St Thomas

The Church of St Mary and St Thomas is a Norman church with a 15th-century tower topped by a short spire. The stonework throughout the exterior shows detailed craftsmanship characteristic of its period.

The building dates to around 1150 and remains from an early medieval settlement. The landscape changed when Knebworth Park was established near the start of the 14th century, causing the original settlement to disappear.

The Lytton Chapel holds monuments to a family that played a central role in shaping the local area. Visitors can see how the chapel served as their private burial space before they moved their commemorations elsewhere.

Excavations conducted between the church and Knebworth House uncovered evidence of medieval settlements hidden beneath the parkland. These discoveries reveal that the area was far more populated in the Middle Ages than the current landscape suggests.
