St Paul's Walden Bury, Formal garden in St Paul's Walden, England
St Paul's Walden Bury is a country estate with roughly 50 acres of landscaped grounds in the village of St Paul's Walden, Hertfordshire. Geometric paths wind through a wooded garden toward classical temples, sculptures, lakes, and ponds scattered among the trees.
The estate was created around 1720 alongside the main house and remains in the hands of the Bowes Lyon family. Over the following centuries the family extended the grounds and maintained the paths and plantings.
The garden incorporates French design principles with three grass allées radiating from the house's main facade, bordered by precisely trimmed beech hedges.
The garden opens on selected days from spring through autumn, offering guided house tours or self-guided walks outdoors. Paths can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
Snowdrops appear from February among the trees, followed by orchids in summer and autumn crocuses later in the year. Sculptures of Venus and Adonis stand at key points along the paths, marking viewpoints within the garden.
