Sumac Centre, Self-managed social center in Forest Fields, Nottingham, United Kingdom.
The Sumac Centre is a volunteer-run community space housed in a former Ukrainian social club building in Forest Fields. It provides meeting rooms, workshop areas, and resources for groups working on human rights, animal welfare, environmental issues, and peace activism.
The centre was founded in June 2001 and grew from the work of the Rainbow Centre, which had operated since 1984. The purchase of the former Ukrainian social club building led to the establishment of its current location and the continuation of community work there.
The name comes from the sumac plant and represents a deliberate choice by the founders to connect the space with nature and activism. Visitors can observe how people gather here to work on community projects and shared causes together.
The People's Kitchen serves communal meals on Saturdays, while Sunday Brunch runs from 11 AM to 2 PM, and the Forest Fields Social Club bar operates from noon to 4 PM. Visitors should plan flexible timing and check in advance about specific group meetings, as programming changes regularly.
The centre operates a Food Hub that originated during the pandemic and continues to distribute food and eco-friendly household items to the community. This project shows how the space's work extends beyond meetings and discussions into everyday support for the neighborhood.
