Terling Windmill, Historical windmill in Terling, England
Terling Windmill is a four-story smock mill built on an octagonal brick foundation with double Patent sails and an aluminum-clad cap. The structure has been converted into a private residence while retaining its external historical form and internal working machinery.
The mill was built around 1818 as a bark mill for processing tree bark and was later repurposed as a grain mill. It continued operating until a serious accident in 1950 ended its working life.
The mill served as a film location for the 1937 British movie "Oh, Mr. Porter!" starring Will Hay, giving it a place in local entertainment history. Such cinematic connections helped make it memorable beyond its industrial role.
The mill can be viewed from public roads and retains its historical appearance without requiring special access to appreciate its architecture. Visitors should respect that it is a private residence and observe from a distance to see its distinctive form.
The final working sails were sourced from two separate East Anglian mills and combined to keep the structure operational. This assembly of components from different locations reflects the practical ingenuity needed to maintain the machinery.
