Tatton Park, Neoclassical country house and gardens in Knutsford, England
Tatton Park is a country estate in Knutsford with a neoclassical mansion, formal gardens, a deer park, and farmland. The estate also includes a timber-framed medieval manor house, a working farm, and miles of walking paths through open parkland and woodland.
John Egerton commissioned the mansion in the early 18th century, and Samuel and Lewis Wyatt reshaped it starting in 1758. The Egerton family lived on the estate for generations before it passed into public ownership.
The gardens display different design styles, from the formal Italian Garden to open landscape areas arranged with lakes and plantings. Visitors can also see the historic farm where rare breeds are raised and traditional farming methods are practiced.
The grounds offer many walking routes through open fields, woodlands, and around lakes, suitable for different fitness levels. Visitors should wear good footwear as many areas have unpaved paths and can become muddy after rain.
During the Second World War, the grounds were converted into a parachute training school where over 60,000 soldiers trained for airborne operations. Today, few traces remain of this military past, and the parkland has returned to its peaceful character.
