Taunton Grammar School, Grade II* listed grammar school in Taunton, England
Taunton Grammar School is a building with Tudor-style architecture located on Corporation Street, constructed from rubble stone with carefully dressed ashlar accents. The structure spans eleven bays across its facade and demonstrates the craftsmanship typical of its period.
The eastern section of the building took shape around 1480, and Bishop Richard Foxe of Winchester refounded the school in 1522 with an endowment. These two moments marked the beginning of a long educational tradition.
For centuries, the school shaped the lives of young people from the surrounding region and held an important place in the community's identity. Its reputation drew families from across Somerset who valued the education offered within its walls.
Access to the building requires prior arrangement, as it no longer functions as an active school. Visitors should contact the relevant authorities in Taunton beforehand to plan a visit.
The interior preserves historical spaces including the former boys' dormitory and the original schoolroom used for lessons. These rooms offer a rare glimpse into how daily education unfolded within a medieval institution.
