Television Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, Television broadcasting complex in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
Television Centre Newcastle was a broadcasting complex comprising four main studios housed within converted furniture warehouse buildings on City Road near the River Tyne. The facility utilized renovated industrial structures to serve as the production base for regional television output.
The facility operated as the headquarters of Tyne Tees Television from 1959 to 2005, serving as the primary regional ITV broadcaster for Northeast England. The complex was demolished in 2009, with only two structures repurposed as residential apartments at the site.
The studios served as the creative hub for regional television production, connecting audiences across Northeast England through locally made news, entertainment, and documentary content.
The site is no longer open to visitors, as most of the original buildings were demolished. You can see the location from City Road where the former complex once stood, and notice the converted residential structures that remain at the location.
Staff members informally called two nearby pubs Studio 5 before an actual fifth studio was constructed in 1981. This nickname reflected how the crew playfully adapted to the constraints of their working space.
