Thelwall Viaduct, Steel composite girder viaduct in Lymm, England
The Thelwall Viaduct is a road bridge spanning the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey near Warrington. It carries multiple lanes of the M6 motorway high above the waterway below.
The original bridge opened in 1959 to improve regional traffic flow across the water crossing. A second parallel structure was added later to handle increased demand on the route.
The structure received its name from the Thelwall Eyes area it crosses, despite being located within the boundaries of Lymm district.
The bridge allows tall vessels to pass underneath while traffic flows overhead, making it useful for both shipping and road transport. Drivers experience a clear view of the water crossing from the motorway.
A second parallel bridge opened in December 1996, measuring 4,500 feet and creating an eight-lane crossing for increased traffic capacity.
