The Big Idea, Science museum in North Ayrshire, Scotland
The Big Idea is a science museum in North Ayrshire, Scotland, with exhibition areas covering themes such as power, materials, communication, and mechanisms. The building features hands-on displays where visitors can interact directly with the exhibits rather than just look at them.
The museum opened in April 2000 on the site of a former Nobel Explosives factory, once one of the largest of its kind in Scotland. Transforming that industrial ground into a place for public learning gave the area a very different role from its original one.
The museum displays works by Scottish inventors such as John Napier and Alexander Fleming throughout its exhibition areas. Visitors can see how these innovators shaped science and technology.
The building sits on the edge of the River Irvine and is reached on foot via a movable bridge that connects it to the town center of Irvine. Visitors coming from the town simply cross that bridge to arrive directly at the entrance.
Shortly before the museum opened, pupils from a nearby primary school buried a time capsule under the reception area. It is still there today, unopened and waiting.
