Tower of Hallbar, Tower house in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Tower of Hallbar is a five-story stone tower house in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, near the town of Carluke, with a square plan and exceptionally thick walls. It stands on a rural plot and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a Scottish tower house from the 1500s.
The tower was built in the 1500s, a period when royal orders pushed Scottish landowners to erect defensive structures on their estates. In 1581, the property passed to the Stewart family, who held it for several generations.
The tower sits on land that once fell under strict royal building rules meant to strengthen Scotland's defenses during the 1500s. Visitors can still see the heavy stone construction that reflected these historical requirements.
The tower now operates as holiday accommodation, so its interior is accessible to guests staying there rather than to general visitors. It sits in a rural area away from main roads, so planning your route before arrival is a good idea.
The winding staircase that links all five floors turns clockwise, a design said to give right-handed defenders an advantage when fighting upward. The cellar below has a barrel-vaulted ceiling, which was originally meant to protect the lower floors from fire spreading from beneath.
