The Oracle, large indoor shopping and leisure mall on the banks of the River Kennet in Reading, Berkshire, England
The Oracle is a large shopping and entertainment center in Reading, England, located next to the River Kennet. It contains major department stores, over twenty restaurants and cafes with riverside seating, a cinema, and features wide walkways and bright lighting that make it easy to move around.
The center opened in 1999 on land that once housed a brewery and tram depot, developing in three phases with the final one completed by 2000. This expansion connected the mall directly to the town's main street, transforming it into a modern focal point for Reading.
The Oracle takes its name from an old workhouse that once stood on this site, connecting the center to Reading's past. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals meet, shop, and spend time together, forming an important part of the town's social life.
The center is easily reached by car or bus, with parking for over 2,300 vehicles in two large garages and nearby lots. Two small bridges connect the parking area and cinema to the shops, making it convenient to navigate through the entire facility.
The center features a large reflective sculpture called the Crystal Beacon sitting atop a multilevel parking garage, catching light in different ways. This artistic installation reflects the deliberate design approach of incorporating art into the center's structure and surroundings.
