Walter's Mill, Mark Cross, Tower mill in Mark Cross, England
Walter's Mill is a five-story brick windmill at Mark Cross with tile-hung walls and originally powered by four Patent sails. The structure features a Kentish-style cap and was designed to grind grain for the surrounding area.
First recorded in 1845, the mill operated until a fire in 1911 destroyed much of its working machinery. It was restored afterward and converted to gas engine power rather than wind.
The mill represents traditional grain processing methods in Sussex, containing two pairs of underdrift millstones for grinding local cereals.
The mill was converted to residential use in 1962 and remains private property today. You can view the exterior and its brick construction from public footpaths that pass nearby.
A vintage postcard issued by the Photochrom Company shows the mill with a special stamp dating the image to before 1918. These hand-colored cards were once popular travel souvenirs that captured how the structure looked in its working days.
