Argos Hill Mill, Mayfield

The Argos Hill Mill is a post mill in East Sussex, England, fitted with four patent sails mounted on a cast iron shaft. The structure features a low rounded base and a tail-mounted fan mechanism that automatically rotates the building to face the wind.

The mill was built between 1831 and 1834 and operated for grain processing until 1923. After ceasing commercial work, the building survived for decades before a trust undertook its restoration and made it accessible to the public.

The mill displays traditional Sussex millwright craftsmanship visible in its wooden structure and functional components. This style of construction was typical of local craftsmen who built such facilities across the region.

Access to the building is limited to scheduled open days organized by the Argos Hill Windmill Trust. Visitors should check in advance when visits are possible, as the interior and mechanisms are not available daily.

The main post of the mill is made from four separate timber pieces, a construction method found in only two windmills in England. This unusual detail shows the crafting variations that different millwrights applied in their work.
