Tregwynt Hoard, Civil War coin collection in Pembrokeshire, Wales
The Tregwynt Hoard is a collection of coins and jewelry from the 17th century discovered in 1996 during construction work on a tennis court in Pembrokeshire. The collection includes hundreds of silver and gold coins along with an inscribed gold ring.
The coins span about 80 years under different English rulers, from the 16th into the 17th century. They were buried shortly before or during the Civil War, likely to protect them from seizure.
The coins came from seven different emergency mints that royalists operated during the Civil War, showing how complex the money system was at that time. Each mint produced currency under pressure and uncertainty.
The collection is held at the National Museum Wales in Cardiff where it can be viewed. It makes sense to plan your visit in advance and check the museum's opening times beforehand.
A gold ring in the collection bears the inscription 'Better death than false of faith', reflecting a personal conviction during a time of instability. The ring connects an intimate symbol of faith with the larger political conflicts of the era.
