White Barrow

White Barrow is a Neolithic burial mound located on Salisbury Plain that stretches roughly 77 meters long and 47 meters wide. The earthen structure is surrounded by a ditch that clearly marks its boundaries in the open landscape.

The mound was constructed during the Neolithic period to serve as a burial place for community members. In 1909 the National Trust purchased it as their first archaeological site acquired specifically for preservation.

The mound reflects ancient burial practices that shaped how communities remembered their dead during the Neolithic period. Walking around it today, visitors sense how important this place was to the people who built it for their ancestors.

The site is freely accessible via designated pathways across Salisbury Plain throughout the year. The location sits in an open landscape exposed to changing weather, so visitors should dress for wind and prepare for shifting conditions.

A geophysical survey in 1997 revealed clues of a possible burial chamber hidden within the mound itself. An arc of wooden posts at the eastern end also suggested the builders used more complex construction methods than the simple outer shape indicates.
