St Michael's Church, Basingstoke, Gothic church in Basingstoke, England
St Michael's Church is a Gothic building with a double-aisled nave, a west tower, and two chapels flanking the chancel, constructed from flint and rubble. The interior displays typical English Gothic features with architectural details reflecting different building periods.
Construction of this church began in the mid-14th century and continued over several decades. The 16th century brought significant modifications, including the addition of a south porch in 1539.
Inside, you will find a rare wooden triptych created by Jan Sanders van Hemessen in 1549, which was donated to the church during the 1870s by a local vicar. This artwork remains one of the building's most treasured possessions today.
The church is located on Church Street in central Basingstoke and is easy to reach on foot. It remains open during regular service times and hosts various community activities throughout the week.
The novelist Thomas Hardy featured this church in his novel 'Jude the Obscure,' describing how it appeared in the town's landscape. This literary reference makes it a point of interest for readers familiar with the classic novel.
