Pitfour Castle, Category A listed castle in St Madoes, Scotland
Description
Pitfour Castle is a country residence in Perthshire featuring a main structure with a curved staircase and cupola at its centre. The estate sits within approximately 12 acres of grounds and is now divided into separate residential apartments.
History
A merchant connected to the Tay salmon fisheries commissioned the current building around 1784, replacing an earlier tower house on the site. The reconstruction introduced a fresh architectural approach suited to the era.
Culture
The interior displays painted panels by artist Zucchi, reflecting how Scottish gentry of the time incorporated fine art into their homes. This decoration gives the residence a distinctive, art-conscious character that visitors encounter throughout.
Practical
The building is now divided into residential apartments and operates as private housing, so public access is limited. Visitors should check beforehand whether viewings are available, as it remains a private property.
Did you know?
During restoration work in 1966, removal of a Victorian entrance hall revealed the original design by architect Robert Adam underneath. This hidden layer uncovered the elegant classical design that had been concealed beneath later alterations.
