Friarton Bridge, Road bridge in Perth, Scotland.
Friarton Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Tay to the southeast of Perth. It carries traffic on four lanes and forms the northeastern end of the M90 motorway connecting the region to southern parts of Scotland.
The bridge opened in 1978 following a design by Freeman Fox & Partners and was the longest steel girder span in the United Kingdom at that time. It was built to handle growing traffic between Edinburgh and Aberdeen more efficiently.
The bridge connects the communities of Perth and Kinross, forming an essential part of Scotland's transportation network between Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
The structure is only for motor vehicles and has no separate space for pedestrians or cyclists. Those who need to cross should use alternative routes nearby, as this bridge is designed solely for car traffic.
The bridge includes a 76 meter wide navigation channel that allows river vessels to pass freely through. This generous clearance beneath the spans is one of the notable features of the design.
