Greyfriars Burial Ground, Medieval cemetery in Perth, Scotland
Greyfriars Burial Ground is a rectangular cemetery in Perth divided by paths into eastern and western sections. It contains numerous gravestones spanning different historical periods, all maintained within a clearly defined layout.
The burial ground was established in 1580 when St John's Kirk cemetery reached capacity. The site had previously occupied a Franciscan friary that was founded in 1496.
The gravestones display carved symbols representing trades and professions of those buried here, particularly on stones from the 1700s and 1800s. These carvings offer a window into the daily lives and work of past residents.
You can enter through the north gate from Canal Street or the east gate from Tay Street, with well-maintained paths for easy navigation. The layout makes it straightforward to explore both sections of the cemetery.
Thirteen of the earliest gravestones, including the Buchan Stone from 1580, are preserved under a protective roof at the southern end. These stones provide direct evidence of the cemetery's earliest years.
