Perth mercat cross, Market cross in Perth, Scotland.
Perth Mercat Cross is a market cross in Perth, Scotland, featuring a cylindrical stone shaft on a square base topped with a statue representing commerce. Four carved balusters frame the corners of the base, decorated with guild crests.
The original market cross dates to medieval times, but the current structure was built in 1913 as the fifth version of this landmark. Each rebuild reflected the city's growth and changing role as a commercial hub.
The cross displays thirteen carved crests of trade guilds that shaped Perth's commercial life. These symbols speak to the different craftspeople and merchants who worked in the city over the centuries.
The cross is located on King Edward Street next to Perth City Hall and serves as a central meeting point for navigating the city center. It is easily accessible on foot and sits in the heart of the shopping district with other historic sites nearby.
The top section of the third version, demolished in 1765, remains preserved in the grounds of Fingask Castle. This surviving fragment links Perth with a nearby castle and preserves a piece of the earlier market cross history.
