Perth, 21, 23 North Port, Fair Maid's House, Category B listed house in North Port, Perth, Scotland.
Fair Maid's House is a two-story stone building with carved stonework above its entrance, located on North Port in Perth. The structure displays features typical of a prosperous merchant residence from the late medieval period.
The building was erected in 1475 and initially served as a gathering place before the Glover Incorporation purchased it in 1622. This medieval craft guild became central to the city's administrative and social life during the centuries that followed.
The house became famous through Sir Walter Scott's 1828 novel, which brought this real location into a romantic story set in Perth. Visitors today can trace how literature transformed this ordinary building into a landmark in people's minds.
The building sits in Perth's town center and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that the narrow medieval street offers limited parking nearby.
The north wall contains remnants of a former monastery where an important figure died in 1437. This hidden history lies beneath what visitors see on the surface today.
