Traeth Lafan

Traeth Lafan is a coastal area along the north Wales shore that stretches between Bangor and Llanfairfechan. The landscape shifts between sandy zones, mudflats, and shallow waters that change appearance with the tides throughout the day.

This site received protection status due to its ecological value and role in supporting migratory birds. The designation came because of its diverse coastal habitats and importance for numerous bird species.

The site is best explored during low tide when expansive areas become exposed and more of the landscape reveals itself. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and slippery surfaces, especially when conditions are damp.

This location holds the largest gathering of moulting great crested grebes in Britain, making it critical for protecting this species. During certain seasons, visitors may watch this rare concentration as the birds change their feathers.
