Television Centre, Southampton, Television broadcasting complex in Northam, Southampton, England
Television Centre Southampton was a broadcasting complex with two large studios, production offices, and a scenery department located beside the River Itchen near Northam Bridge. The building spread across two floors and featured a separate rear entrance for staff and production vehicles.
The facility was built in 1967 as the main headquarters for Southern Television and became the centre of regional broadcasting operations. It served three different ITV contractors across its 37-year history before closing in 2004.
The centre was a hub for regional television production and daily news broadcasts serving southern England. It gave viewers a glimpse into how television programmes were actually created and aired.
The site was easily accessible by public transport thanks to its proximity to the river and Northam Bridge. Visitors needed to be aware of the railway tracks that ran through the parking area, which required special safety procedures.
A railway line ran directly through the car park, connecting British Rail sidings at Northam to Driver's Wharf on the riverbank using a diesel shunter locomotive. This working track was an unusual feature for a television studio of this size.
