Mouselow Castle, Norman castle in High Peak, England
Mouselow Castle is a Norman fortification in High Peak, consisting of earthwork remains of a motte-and-bailey structure positioned on a ridge north of Glossop. The site reveals the outline of its medieval defensive design from the road that passes nearby.
The castle was established during the Norman period, likely built atop the remains of an earlier Celtic settlement on the same hilltop. Over time, quarrying operations significantly altered the archaeological structure of the site.
The castle's designation as a scheduled monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 reflects its importance in English medieval heritage.
The site sits beside Hilltop Road, roughly 14 miles east of Manchester, accessible via the A57. Visitors should expect open moorland conditions and wear suitable footwear for walking across uneven terrain.
The original bailey area disappeared due to historical quarrying, permanently altering how the site looks and how archaeologists study it. This change makes it harder to grasp the complete medieval layout that once existed here.
