Penllyn Castle, Medieval fortress in Penllyn, Wales
Penllyn Castle is a Norman fortress in Wales featuring a rectangular tower and two surviving walls built on a clifftop overlooking the River Thaw. The stonework includes distinctive herringbone patterns laid in multiple courses across the remaining structure.
Robert Fitzhamon constructed this fortress in 1135 as one of the first Norman structures established in Glamorgan during the early period of occupation. The site represents an important defensive installation from that era of settlement.
The Turbeville family transformed the castle grounds during Tudor times by building a manor house that incorporated the former castle keep.
The ruins remain on private land, so visiting may require advance permission or may not always be possible. Check local guidelines before planning a visit to understand access conditions.
The manor house and stable block were used as a filming location for the BBC series Doctor Who in 2005. This connection to the television production brought the site brief attention from media and fans.
