Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce, Gaelic school in Edinburgh
Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce is a primary school in Edinburgh that teaches entirely in Scottish Gaelic. The school sits near Pilrig Park in an older building with two floors and serves about four hundred students across sixteen classes, along with a nursery section.
The building dates from the late 1800s and was originally Bonnington Primary School, later expanded by architects James Simpson and George Craig. The school itself opened in 2013 as Edinburgh's first primary school built specifically for Gaelic language education.
The school teaches in Scottish Gaelic and plays an active role in keeping the language alive in everyday use. Families from across the city choose it specifically so their children can grow up speaking Gaelic, making it a gathering place for a minority language community.
The school is easily accessible by public transport and situated in a residential area that is convenient for local families. Visitors and parents can call during school hours or visit the website to find information about programs, events, and practical details.
The school grew out of a small Gaelic class that started in 1988 with only seven students at Tollcross Primary School and expanded over the years. Most of those early Gaelic learners moved to the new school when it opened in 2013, showing how a small group drove the creation of a full Gaelic primary school.
