Barjarg Tower

Barjarg Tower, Tower house in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

Barjarg Tower is a four-story L-shaped stone house made from reddish rubble stone, with three distinct turrets at its corners. The interior spaces have been updated with modern features while the historical outer walls remain unchanged.

Thomas Grierson received a land grant from the Earl of Morton in 1587, and his son John built this house with his wife Grizel Kilpatrick. The project took place when such fortified homes were commonly built across southern Scotland.

The tower shows how Scottish noble families designed their homes in the late 1500s, blending daily living spaces with defensive structures. Visitors can see rooms that reflect this combination of comfort and protection.

Access is best approached via local roads, and visitors should expect a rural setting. It is wise to check opening times in advance, since this is a private residence.

The house features an unusual asymmetrical design with one open round turret and two cone-topped turrets, which is a rare arrangement for Scottish fortifications. This mix of different tower shapes makes it stand out when viewed from the courtyard.
