Grubstones, Stone circle in Burley, England
Grubstones is a stone circle on Burley Moor measuring about 10 meters across with roughly 20 surviving stones arranged in an almost perfect circle on a south-facing slope. The stones stand within a low bank that runs around 1.8 meters wide.
The site was built in prehistoric times as a stone circle constructed by early societies. Excavations in the 19th century revealed evidence of ancient burial practices and artifacts from that era.
The prehistoric structure demonstrates the engineering capabilities of ancient societies who constructed ceremonial and astronomical observation sites across the British Isles.
The site lies about 800 meters southeast of another well-known stone circle and can be visited while exploring other archaeological features across the moorland. For the best experience, visitors should wear proper footwear and bring weather protection, as the land is open and exposed.
Four large loose stones on the southern side may have come from earlier damage or disturbance, offering clues about how this circle has changed over time. These moveable elements show that not all stones have stayed in their original spots.
