Municipal Borough of Wimbledon, Municipal borough in South West London, England
The Municipal Borough of Wimbledon was an administrative area in South West London, covering residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and open green spaces, most notably Wimbledon Common. The Town Hall, opened in 1931 at the corner of Queen's Road and Wimbledon Bridge, served as the seat of local government.
The area was established in 1866 as a local board district and gained municipal borough status in 1905, with its own mayor and council. It kept this status until 1965, when it was merged into the newly created London Borough of Merton.
The coat of arms granted in 1906 features a black double-headed eagle and two Cornish Choughs, with the motto 'Sine Labe Decus', meaning 'Honor without stain'. These symbols appeared on public buildings across the area and gave the borough a visible identity of its own.
Wimbledon Common is easy to explore on foot, with many paths through open land and wooded sections. Those visiting the wider area should keep in mind that it is mainly residential, with shops and services open during standard hours.
In 1914, the borough tried without success to become a county borough, a status that would have freed it from the authority of Middlesex County Council. This effort shows how actively local leaders were pushing to govern their own affairs at that time.
