Norrington Manor, Medieval manor house in Alvediston, England.
Norrington Manor is a medieval manor house in Alvediston with dressed limestone walls, tiled roofs, and precisely cut stone chimneys. The building combines features from multiple construction periods, including a three-bay hall, a Tudor-arched stone chimneypiece, and a 15th-century porch.
Construction of the current structure began in 1377 when John Gawen acquired the property and initiated building work. The estate later changed hands and came under the ownership of Sir Wadham Wyndham in 1658.
The manor displays architectural choices from different eras that tell the story of how tastes changed over time. The Tudor arches and pointed entryway show how builders adapted their methods and styles across generations.
The estate sits in a rural setting and is accessible through marked gate piers that help with orientation. Visitors should be prepared for the countryside location and wear appropriate footwear for walking the grounds.
The building contains a 17th-century newel staircase with turned balusters that shows the craftsmanship of the period. This staircase in the east wing is an overlooked detail that highlights the care taken inside the house.
