Church of St Augustine, Clutton, Medieval parish church in Clutton, England
Church of St Augustine is a medieval parish church featuring a tower with diagonal buttresses that end in pinnacles, its walls displaying bands of red sandstone throughout. The interior retains original architectural elements from the 12th century, including the entrance porch arch and chancel arch.
The church was founded around 1201, making it one of the area's oldest structures with original 12th century elements still visible. Over subsequent centuries, additions and modifications shaped the building into the form visitors encounter today.
The churchyard contains five Grade II listed monuments that mark the resting places of notable local families, including ancestors of actor Henry Irving. These memorials reflect centuries of community life and connection to the village.
The church holds regular services and welcomes visitors during open hours, so checking ahead is sensible before making the trip. The building sits within easy walking distance of the village center with free access to the churchyard and its monuments.
An oak gallery installed in 1970 houses a pipe organ presented to the church by the Earl of Warwick in 1856. This generous gift from such a prominent figure reveals the church's importance to regional society during the Victorian era.
