Eleanor Rigby statue, Bronze sculpture near Cavern Club, Liverpool, England
Eleanor Rigby is a bronze sculpture of a woman seated with a handbag on Stanley Street in Liverpool. A shopping bag and newspaper rest beside her on the stone bench that forms part of the artwork.
The artist Tommy Steele created and unveiled this sculpture in December 1982 as a tribute to the Beatles. He offered it to Liverpool City Council for three pence to honor the city's musical heritage.
The figure references the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby and shows a person in an everyday moment. The spot on Stanley Street has become a place where visitors connect with a famous piece of music history.
The sculpture stands between railings on Stanley Street next to the former Post Office and near St Johns Beacon. The location is easy to reach and accessible by public transport.
Inside the hollow bronze figure, Steele placed several hidden objects including an adventure book, a Bible page, and football boots. These concealed items make the sculpture a mysterious artwork that extends beyond its outward appearance.
