Church of St Mary Magdalene

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a medieval building that rises above the village with a distinctive west tower topped by a spire. Inside, the structure includes a nave with a wide north aisle and a chancel, with the layout showing changes from renovations over the centuries.

The building began as a chapel in the 13th century and gradually developed into a parish church. Major restructuring occurred in 1790 when the arcade connecting the nave and north aisle was removed, fundamentally changing how the interior space felt and functioned.

The churchyard draws visitors who come to pay respects at the graves of musician Nick Drake and motorcyclist Mike Hailwood, two figures whose lives touched many people. This quiet burial ground has become a destination for fans and those interested in the lives these individuals led.

The church is generally open to visitors and hosts regular services as well as community gatherings throughout the year. It sits in the heart of the village and is easily reached on foot, making it convenient to explore while walking through the area.

The church tower underwent an unusual modification in 1720 when its spire was extended upward, permanently altering the building's silhouette. This change reflects how communities sometimes adapted their landmarks to suit changing preferences and needs.
