St Mary Magdalene, Paddington, Gothic Anglican church in Paddington, England.
St Mary Magdalene is a Gothic church in Paddington built with brick and stone and topped by a needle spire. It features a double arcade along the north aisle and stained glass windows designed by Henry Holiday.
Construction began in 1867, but a fire destroyed the original roof and delayed the opening until 1873. The building was completed after this setback and became an important fixture in Victorian Paddington.
The church displays mosaics by Salviati and sculptures by Thomas Earp throughout its interior. The crypt chapel was designed by Ninian Comper and reflects his artistic vision.
The building has a large crypt with a level floor that is easy to navigate and vestries at the east end. Recent extensions provide additional community spaces for various activities and gatherings.
The north side of the building features a five-foot-wide false aisle that allowed the main arcade to reach its full height. This was a clever solution to comply with building regulations of the time.
