Place Farmhouse, Medieval farmhouse in Tisbury, England
Place Farmhouse is a two-story stone building with six windows on its west side and a Gothic arch in its gabled porch. Inside are rooms with varying layouts and stone details that reflect the building's age.
The building was constructed in the 14th century as a monastic property for Shaftesbury Abbey. It underwent major changes in the 19th century when the Fonthill Estate took control and modified its structure.
The building shows features from different periods that you notice as you move through it. The stonework and the way rooms are arranged tell the story of the different times when people lived and worked here.
The building sits on farming land and can be viewed from the outside, with the west side showing the most architectural details. A separate stable nearby belongs to the property, making the layout easy to understand for visitors.
The roof inside features an arched timber system with curved wind bracing that shows medieval building techniques and has remained intact for centuries. This hidden construction reveals the skilled craftsmanship of builders from hundreds of years ago.
