Snodhill Castle, Norman castle in Peterchurch, England.
Snodhill Castle is a Norman-era fortification in Herefordshire featuring the classic motte and bailey design with raised earthworks and a central elevated area. The grounds spread across ten acres and include a former medieval deer park extending toward Vagar Hill.
The castle was established before 1136 by a commander who served under William the Conqueror. It underwent multiple building phases during the four centuries when the Chandos family held and developed the property.
The grounds have long served as a gathering place for the local community, with records showing people picnicking here since the 1800s. Today, this role continues as a space where neighbors meet outdoors.
The site welcomes visitors year-round with no entrance fees, making it accessible whenever you want to explore the grounds. Keep in mind that some areas may be cordoned off due to ongoing archaeological investigation and conservation work.
The castle faced collapse until a major restoration effort began in 2017, bringing funding for archaeological research and conservation work. This investment transformed it from a neglected site into a place where visitors can now safely explore the remains.
