Snape Castle, Medieval castle in Snape, North Yorkshire, England.

Snape Castle is a fortified structure with a central courtyard flanked by walls featuring Perpendicular-style windows and chimneys from the Elizabethan era. The layout demonstrates a blend of medieval construction with modifications from later periods.

The Neville family held the castle from the early 15th century until the 16th century, when Sir Thomas Cecil acquired it through marriage in 1577. This change of ownership marked a turning point in the property's control and development.

The private chapel of St Mary displays decorative works by Italian painter Antonio Verrio that can still be seen today, and holds a memorial to those lost in the First World War.

The undercroft section now functions as holiday accommodation with two bedrooms, welcoming visitors and one dog for stays of at least two nights. Plan your visit accordingly since this is private rental accommodation rather than a public attraction open without reservation.

During the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1537, Katherine Parr and her children were held at the castle as hostages. John Neville negotiated their release, highlighting the site's importance during this turbulent period.
