Nappa Hall

Nappa Hall is a manor house in Askrigg built with a central single-story hall flanked by a four-story western tower and a two-story eastern tower connected by stone walls and slate roofs. The structure combines residential and defensive elements in one composition.

James Metcalf built this fortified residence in 1459, and a new wing was added during the 17th century. These modifications reflect how the building adapted to changing needs over time.

The building displays medieval features like pointed arches and stone corbels that remain visible today. These details reflect the craftsmanship and building methods of the 15th century.

The building is in need of significant repairs, particularly the western tower which has roof leaks and deteriorating floors. Visit with an understanding that the interior may have structural concerns and limited access in some areas.

The western tower contains specialized windows with cinque-cusped pointed lights beneath hood-moulds that demonstrate medieval defensive design. These elaborate window details are rare examples of blending aesthetics with protection in fortified homes.
