The Kings Arms Hotel, Grade II listed hotel in Askrigg, England
The Kings Arms Hotel is a Grade II listed stone building with a slate roof spanning three stories, each with three window bays, and a mounting block with four steps attached to the exterior wall. Inside, the floors are connected by a striking cantilevered limestone staircase that rises through the center of the building.
The building was constructed in 1767 as a residence for John Pratt, a prominent horse breeder associated with Newmarket Racecourse. It transitioned to hotel use following its purchase by John and Joseph Lodge in 1800.
The hotel served as the filming location for the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small, making it a recognizable landmark for fans of the show. Visitors often come specifically to see where scenes from the beloved television drama were shot.
The hotel is centrally located in the village and easily accessible on foot from the main street. Original features like the lower-floor sash windows with glazing bars and the upper-floor nine-pane windows remain intact and provide a clear sense of the building's age and original craftsmanship.
The ground-floor lounge contains an 18th-century fireplace and period paneling that reflect the careful design of the original residence. These interior details reveal how the building was crafted to express both comfort and social standing.
