Taunton Unitarian Chapel, Religious chapel in Taunton, England.
Taunton Unitarian Chapel is a chapel with Italianate architectural features located in Taunton, Somerset. The building shows round-headed windows, a central doorway framed with pilasters, and a triangular pediment at the entrance, while the interior contains square Corinthian columns and oak galleries.
The building was originally constructed in 1712 as a Baptist chapel and shifted to Unitarian use during the 1700s. Minister Joseph Jeffries played a key role in establishing the Unitarian community that continues here.
The name reflects its Unitarian roots, a tradition established here during the 1700s. Inside, you can see wooden galleries and a brass chandelier that visitors have contributed over time, each representing different periods of the community's life.
Services happen twice a month, on the first and third Sundays, making it easy to plan a visit. The chapel sits in the town center, so you can reach it on foot with no difficulty.
The Mary Street Memorial Schools stood next to the chapel, opening in 1886 and running until 1933. These schools were unusual for teaching boys and girls together when many places kept them separate.
