St George's Church, Roman Catholic church in Taunton, England
St George's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Taunton that was built with red Monkton stone and decorative Bath stone dressings. The building displays Gothic design features and has seating for around 350 people.
Construction started in 1858 and the building opened in 1860, serving as a replacement for a smaller chapel that had become inadequate. This new church reflected the growth of the Catholic community in the region during the 1800s.
The church serves as a gathering place for different communities who come together for worship regularly. You will notice both traditional services with choir singing and more contemporary celebrations featuring musical accompaniment.
The church is located on Billet Street and is easy to reach by public transport. Regular services are held in the morning, so you can plan your visit accordingly.
The original design included a tall tower with a spire on top, but only the lower tower section was actually completed. The missing upper part is still visible today and shows how the building turned out differently than first planned.
