Vivary Park, Public park in Taunton, England
Vivary Park is a public park in the heart of Taunton, laid out with garden beds, walking paths, tennis courts, and a decorative fountain at its centre. The grounds also contain a golf course, an adventure centre with high ropes, a children's play area, and bowling greens run by the Taunton Bowling Club.
The land was a medieval fish pond that supplied the local priory and castle, and the name Vivary comes from the Latin vivarium, meaning a place where live animals are kept. It was turned into a public park during the 19th century.
The park hosts the Taunton Flower Show every year, one of the oldest gardening events in Somerset, drawing visitors from across the region. During the show, the lawns fill with garden displays and stalls, giving the park a lively character that contrasts with its everyday calm.
The park is easy to walk around, and the different areas are well spread out so you can move between the gardens, sports facilities, and adventure centre without backtracking. A visit works well at any time of year, though summer brings the most activity to the grounds.
The decorative fountain at the centre of the park was installed in 1907 and paid for with money left over from the local celebrations for the coronation of Edward VII. Most visitors pass it without knowing it was built as a memorial to Queen Victoria using funds meant for a party.
